Meet John W. Tyson

John W. Tyson is a dedicated pianist, conductor, and music educator from North Carolina. He began piano lessons at age nine and soon expanded his musical studies to include trumpet. His passion for music led him to pursue a degree at East Carolina University’s A.J. Fletcher School of Music, where he was a North Carolina Teaching Fellow and studied piano under Dr. Keiko Sekino.

During his college years, John performed at the Yves Nat Piano Festival in Béziers, France, Steinway Hall in New York City, and with the ECU Orchestra. He also developed a strong interest in choral conducting, studying privately and later expanding his expertise in Italy, where he received a certificate in piano and choral conducting from the Milan Conservatory and Academia Tadini.

John taught band and choir in public schools for several years, leading award-winning ensembles and inspiring many students to pursue music professionally. His teaching experience spans solo piano instruction, choral and instrumental ensemble direction, and festival preparation. His students have performed in international piano festivals, given solo recitals, and competed in prestigious competitions such as Steinway’s Young Artist program.

John’s choral ensemble performed at Carnegie Hall in 2022, and he has served as a faculty member at the Montreat Music and Worship Conference. He has judged numerous music festivals and remains an active member of the North Carolina Music Educators Association, NC Music Teachers Association, American Guild of Organists, and the American Choral Directors Association.

Outside the studio, John has explored many artistic passions. He has danced with the National Shag Dance Team, performed lead roles in community theater, and earned national-level awards in competitive dressage with his thoroughbred horse, Jack Reacher.

Today, John brings his deep musical experience and love for teaching to The Tyson Piano Studio, where students of all ages are encouraged to grow, explore, and thrive through music.
